Mold allergy: A mold allergy is an adverse reaction by the body's immune system to spores produced by a mold. Symptoms tend to occur in a seasonal pattern as spore production by molds tends to increase and decrease with changes in seasons. The specific symptoms that can result can vary amongst patients. Treatments for Mold allergy

• Avoid coming into contact with the allergen, various medications depending on the symptoms and severity: antihistamines, bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, decongestants, nasal sprays, cromolyn sodium, immunotherapy
• Treatment of mold allergy is dependant upon the type and severity of the allergic symptoms. Treatments for mold allergies include:
  • Allergen avoidance and minimisation of exposure - maintaining a dry environment in the house and workplace as much as possible.
  • Antihistamines - Useful for allergic rhinitis and some allergy mediated skin conditions. Not helpful in asthma except for mild seasonal asthma where allergy may be a precipitant.
  • Nasal sprays - including topical steroids and antiinflammatories used for allergic rhinitis

Along with pollens from trees, grasses, and weeds, molds are an important cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis. People allergic to molds may have symptoms from spring to late fall. The mold season often peaks from July to late summer. Unlike pollens, molds may persist after the first killing frost. Some can grow at subfreezing temperatures, but most become dormant. Snow cover lowers the outdoor mold count dramatically but does not kill molds. After the spring thaw, molds thrive on the vegetation that has been killed by the winter cold.
