Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis
Treatments for Multiple Sclerosis:
Treatment of multiple sclerosis consists of a well integrated plan that is customized to the individual's specific case. There currently is no cure for multiple sclerosis and treatment plans are geared toward managing symptoms and suppressing the body's autoimmune response, which is believed to be at the root of multiple sclerosis. The goal is to minimize symptoms and complications so people with multiple sclerosis can live as full and active lives as possible.
People with mild cases of multiple sclerosis may need or chose to have little or no treatment. However, all people with the disease are encouraged to keep their bodies as strong and healthy as possible by engaging in regular moderate exercise, eating a well-balanced diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. Avoiding excessive heat and exercise, which can bring on periods of fatigue, is key.
For people whose symptoms are more severe, treatment may include medications. In some people some medications, such as beta interferons, may reduce the number of episodes of symptoms and slow progression of the disease. Other medications include copolymer, which has few side effects and may reduce the number of attacks of multiple sclerosis. Novantrone may be used for severe, advanced multiple sclerosis.
Other medications that may be used include corticosteroids, which may minimize the intensity of symptoms, and muscle relaxers, which can reduce muscle spasms.
Other treatments include physical therapy, which can help to strengthen muscles and keep joints flexible. In addition, equipment, such as walkers, canes, and braces may also be needed to help maintain mobility and independence.

were the principal medications for MS. While steroids cannot affect the
course of MS over time, they can reduce the duration and severity of
attacks in some patients. The FDA has recently approved new drugs to treat
MS. The goals of therapy are threefold: to improve recovery from attacks,
to prevent or lessen the number of relapses, and to halt disease
