Infection by a particular type of bacteria called mycobacteria. Infection by bacteria from this genus can result in conditions such as leprosy (M. Leprae), tuberculosis (M. Tuberculosis) and granuloma (M. Balnei). However, many people are infected with mycobacteria but don't know as they never develop symptoms. Treatments for Mycobacterial infections

• Treatment of mycobacterial infections depends upon the particular mycobacteria and the illness that it causes, the severity of the illness, and the age of the patient and any other health problems that the patient might have (such as HIV). Treatments include:
  • Antituberculous drugs - usually combination therapy and for a prolonged period of time
  • Other antibiotics for atypical mycobacterial infections - usually combination therapy and for a prolonged period of time such as erythromycin, erythromycin, rifampicin, doxycycline, ciprofloxacin
  • Surgical debridement of ulcers
  • Drainage of mycobacterial abscesses
