Complaint

Complaint: Written description of the lawsuit (e.g. in medical malpractice)

Complaint: The term "complaint" is widely used to refer generally to a legal action against a person, which is a somewhat imprecise usage of the word. Such uses of the term "complaint" might be more appropriately called the claim or lawsuit. A formal complaint is the written description of the filed lawsuit. For example, a complaint will typically name both parties (e.g. a patient and a doctor in medical malpractice), describe the incident or issues involved, describe the injury to the patient, and so on. The complaint will then be filed as a lawsuit, and may need to be served on the other party to the lawsuit.
