Ritter's disease: A rare disease that occurs in newborns and is caused by upper respiratory staphylococcal infection. It results in the appearance and spread of red spots across the body followed by peeling of large areas of skin. The condition may be fatal if not treated. Also called Lyell's disease or dermatitis exfoliativa neonatorum.
Ritter's disease: A disease of infants due to group 2 phage type 17 staphylococci that produce an epidermolytic exotoxin. Superficial fine vesicles and bullae form and rupture easily, resulting in loss of large sheets of epidermis.
