Silver nitrate: an antiseptic and astringent; formerly used externally, in solution, in the prevention of ophthalmia neonatorum; also used in the special staining of the nervous system, spirochetes, reticular fibers, Golgi apparatus, nucleolar organizer region, and calcium.
