Glossary for Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

  • Amiloride -- Teratogenic Agent: There is strong evidence to indicate that exposure to Amiloride during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Amyloidosis: A rare group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid accumulates in body organs and tissues where it can cause damage and is potentially fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved. There are numerous forms of the condition: primary amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis, hemodialysis-associated amyloidosis and familial amyloidosis.
  • Bardet-Biedl Syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by mental retardation, obesity, polydactyly and retinal pigmentation as well as other abnormalities.
  • Convulsions: Involuntary spasms especially those affecting the full body
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure.
  • Cystinosis: A rare biochemical disorder involving the accumulation of a chemical called cystine in various parts of the body which can cause harmful effects.
  • Dehydration: Loss of fluids in the body
  • Diabetes Insipidus: Rare pituitary disorder often affecting the kidneys.
  • Diabetes-like conditions: Medical conditions that appear to be similar to diabetes.
  • Electrolyte imbalance: impairment in the level of electrolytes in the body
  • Endocrine system conditions: Medical conditions affecting the endocrine systems, such as the related hormones or glands.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Hypokalaemia: Decreased concentration of potassium in the blood
  • Interstitial nephritis: A condition which is characterized by disease of the renal interstitial tissue
  • Kidney conditions: Any condition affecting the kidney organs.
  • Mental retardation -- dysmorphism -- hypogonadism -- diabetes: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.
  • Polycystic kidney disease: Genetic kidney disease causing kidney cysts.
  • Polydipsia: This is where there is a chronic excessive thirst that is also accompanied by excessive fluid intake
  • Polyuria: Excessive urination during pregnancy.
  • Poor infant feeding: Poor infant feeding refers to a reduced or inadequate intake of nutrition in an infant.
  • Proximal Renal Tubular Acidosis: This is a condition that is characterised by a metabolic acidosis state caused by impairment of a persons renal function
  • Urinary system conditions: Medical conditions affecting urination, urinary organs or the urinary system.
  • Vomiting: Vomiting or retching symptoms.
