Nephronophthisis 3

Nephronophthisis 3: Introduction

Nephronophthisis 3: A genetic kidney disorder which causes kidney failure during adolescence. Other problems such as underdeveloped lungs may also be associated with the condition. Type 3 is caused by a defect in the NPHP3 gene. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Nephronophthisis 3 is available below.

Symptoms of Nephronophthisis 3

Treatments for Nephronophthisis 3

  • Manage water and electrolyte balance. Once kidney failure occurs, dialysis or a kidney transplant is necessary for survival
  • Treatment of nephronopthisis is symptomatic as no therapy exists to prevent the progression to end stage renal failure. Management includes:
    • Aggressive management of high blood pressure - helps slow progression of renal disease. ACE (Angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitors and ARB's (Angiotensin II receptor blockers) are considered first line therapy
    • Avoidance of medications that may contribute to further renal damage - NSAID's, IV contrast
    • Smoking cessation - people who continue to smoke progress to end stage renal failure sooner
