Nocturnal asthma: Introduction
Nocturnal asthma: Nocturnal asthma is a type of asthma that tends to only produce symptoms at night. Asthma involves constriction and inflammation of the airways which makes breathing difficult. The severity of symptoms is variable. Factors such as airconditioning, gastroesophageal reflux and sleeping in a reclining positing may increase the incidence of this form of asthma in susceptible patients.

There is no cure but identifying and avoiding the triggering factors will prevent symptoms developing. - Avoid allergens or other factors which trigger the symptoms. Medications such as bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antihistamines and anti-inflammatories
- Nocturnal asthma may be a reflection of generally poorly controlled asthma, and needs to be addressed by optimisation of asthma treatment, especially with long acting preventers such as inhaled corticosteroids
- Nocturnal asthma may also relate to specific factors that arise as night time, resulting in nocturnal symptoms and poor sleep. These factors, and treatment aimed at them include:
