Asthma is characterized by hypersensitive airways that causes increased production of mucus and airway narrowing, resulting in coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Influencing factors include diet, comorbid infections, allergens, pollution, genes and emotions, which can be helped with alternative and complimentary treatments in addition to conventional therapy. Alternative therapies include herbal remedies, praying, supplemental vitamins and minerals and massage (i.e. Bowen therapy). Research has been conducted on relaxation techniques, yoga, and probiotic-supplemented diets with some promising outcomes, but medical advice should always be sought before trying other treatments.
