The Arthritis Foundation has announced the top ten arthritis discoveries in 2004. The include: two new experimental biologic agents are capable of targeting harmful immune cells associated with rheumatoid arthritis; Rituximab which has been approved by the FDA for non-Hodgkin lymphoma may be effective in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, abatacept - a co-stimulation modulator - may be effective in people whose RA is unaffected by methotrexate and/or anti-TNF biologic agents; discovery of a gene variation associated with autoimmune disorders such as RA and lupus which provides new idea about how to treat the cause of these conditions rather than just the symptoms; predictive biological markers have been discovered which allow physicians to determine how aggressive the condition is and whether to treat it with full force or gently to minimize damage and side effects; exercise and diet significantly improve physical function and reduce knee pain in RA sufferers over 60 who are overweight or obese; the antibiotic, doxycycline, can reduce the breakdown of joint cartilage in osteoarthritis; and newly developed AMG 162 may potentially be able to build bone in people with low bone density and prevent bone loss in those with rheumatoid arthritis and those taking coriticosteroids.
