Danish researchers claim that the Atkins diet may not be as good as first thought. New research is starting to give a bigger picture of the long term effects of the Atkins diet which has not previously been done. Long term effects include regaining of all weight lost within a year and various other side effects. However, the researchers believe that the diet could be beneficial in the short term (6 months). They also support the idea that the diet can help with blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The diet's success is based on the fact that protein is more filling than fat and low carbohydrate reduced sugar levels. However, the reduced consumption of whole grain bread and cereals, fruits and vegetables may increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.
