Researchers in Belgian are concerned that some perfumes, deodorants and home air fresheners are posing an unnecessary health risk. For example, incense and scented candles produce carcinogens such as formaldehyde and benzene which may be breathed in. These two products have also been linked to reproductive system damage. Chemicals from other products can cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat or respiratory passages. Pregnant women and asthmatics often have a greater sensitivity to these chemicals. Some fragrances used in cosmetics and deodorants can cause allergies. The study found harmful substances were produced by every product tested.
