A 37 year old paediatrician and mother of 2 is suing her family practitioner for missing breast cancer on a routine check-up. She was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer 10 months later while pregnant with her second child due to a ‘gritty’ region in her breast, which at the time should have been reviewed with a mammogram, or an ultrasound. Instead she was first misdiagnosed and given antibiotics for mastitis, after which she underwent a mastectomy (breast removal) but had to wait for radiotherapy and chemotherapy until after delivery of her baby. She now has frequent analgesics for pain due to the cancer spreading.
