Cancer and mental health compete

Terminal cancer patients with concurrent mental illnesses are not accessing psychiatric assistance due to the patientís lack of awareness of available services and support. From a study that investigated patients with advanced cancer designed to detect depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 12% were found to be suffering from a major mental disorder. Psychiatric disorders left undiagnosed and untreated were more likely to reduce a patients compliance with their cancer management and greatly reduce their quality of life.
