Comparison trial shows Fosamax to be a winner for osteoporosis treatment

A comparison trial concluded that Fosamax (alendronate sodium) was more effective at maintaining or increasing bone mass density than Actonel (risedronate). Fosamax is the only FDA approved treatment for osteporosis and aims to reduce the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women. However, the drugs both had side effects at a similar rate and included: abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, muscle pain and headache. Fosamax is not recommended for use by people suffering gastrointestinal problems.
