Diet supplements need to be governed

Anger is building over the FDAs lack of power to control the diet supplement industry. Pharmaceutical companies are not made to report side effects or even to prove the efficacy of their product. A young man allegedly died from taking ephedra which had caused more than 164 deaths and 16,000 adverse side effects. The FDA took 14 months to ban the product. The FDA is ineffective in controlling the use of many natural products which may be harmful. For example: aristolochic acid is carcinogenic and known to cause kidney failure and death; comfrey, kava, germander and chaparral have been known to cause liver damage and death; and bitter orange has been linked to heart attacks and strokes.
