Familial bipolar disorder traits dictate disease presentation

Manic depressive disorder, nowadays referred to as bipolar affective disorder is characterized by episodes of mania and depression. It is an inherited mental illness and frequency of episodes can be correlated to the degree of severity in affected family members. More frequent episodes predisposed the sufferer to younger age of onset, delusions and hallucinations, drug abuse, alcohol abuse and suicidal tendencies.
