Poinsettias come from the same group of plants as the Brazilian rubber tree and thus people with latex allergies may well suffer latex allergy symptoms when they come into contact with poinsettias. 40% of latex allergy sufferers are react to poinsettia sap. Symptoms may include rash, hives, sneezing, coughing, throat tightness, mouth and throat swelling and breathing difficulty. A severe allergic reaction can cause death. Latex allergy sufferers may also react to bananas, kiwi fruit and peaches. The allergy is incurable but treatment of an attack involves use of an EpiPen and/or inhaler. People suffering from latex allergy cannot contact anything made of rubber such as gloves, boots and swimming goggles.
