Minimally invasive laser surgery and stents provide effective treatment for blocked areteries

A woman became concerned when she started suffering intense leg pain when she walked or ran. She sought doctor's advice and the vascular surgeon found an 80% blockage in the artery from her hip to her knee and a 100% blockage from her knee to her foot. Previously, treatment would have involved vascular bypass surgery but now a catheter can be put into the artery and laser used to remove the blockages. Once the blockage is removed, a stent is put in to keep the artery open. It is a very effective, minimally invasive option. One stent eventually had to be reopened when it started to close but other than that the patient is thrilled with the result. However, this option does still carry some risks and may not be suitable for all patients.
