Misdiagnoses of mental illness

A 28 year old man suffered misdiagnosis for 8 years before he was diagnosed with bipolar type II rapid cycling with schizoaffective disorder after experiencing aural and auditory hallucinations, and fluctuating mood from overly happy to deeply depressed. His treatment now consists of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), medication and group psychotherapy. His parents also benefited from attending support classes to gain a better appreciation of their son's illness. Common social stigmas that surround mental illness are due to uninformed, preconceived ideas, which neglect to acknowledge that the cause is due to brain chemical messenger imbalances that are non-discriminatory.
