Moderate drinking has protective effect against type 2 diabetes

A 20 year Swedish and Finnish research has concluded that moderate alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. The preventative effect was the same for both men and women. However, alcohol consumption by patients with type 1 diabetes may cause delayed hypoglycaemia. The study results also showed that the risk of diabetes increased when high levels of alcohol were consumed by women of low to normal weight. Binge drinking by women was capable of doubling the risk of type 2 diabetes.
