Lupus is an autoimmune disease of which 90% are women. Nearly 50% of lupus patients also develop renal disease. The current treatment for lupus renal disease is corticosteroids and immunosuppressive drugs which can have side effects such as diabetes, hypertension and sterility. The La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company is developing Riquent to treat lupus kidney disease. No new lupus treatment drugs have been released for 30 years even though there are more than 1 million sufferers in America and the UK.
