A report using a survey of low-income, rural women over 40 found that only 30% are advised by their physician about receiving a mammogram. Also, over 40% did not know what a mammogram or Pap smear screened for. African-American and Native American women tended to be more ill-advised than white women about cancer. Breast cancer death rates are higher in low-income women because of later diagnoses. Researchers want this information used by health care providers to increase the rate of cancer screening for women.
