Salt intake linked to heartburn risk

Researchers from Sweden and Norway claim that smoking and high salt consumption are big risk factors for heartburn but regular exercise and consumption of high-fiber bread reduce the risk. The fiber is believed to decrease the level of nitric oxide in the stomach. Nitric oxide causes reflux by relaxing muscles at the bottom of esophagus. They found that tea, coffee and alcohol had an insignificant impact on the condition. Regular use of table salt increased the risk of developing acid reflux by 70%. Salted meat or fish eaten at least three times per week increased the risk by 50%.
