Scientists discover way to give schizophrenia patients individualized treatments

Traditionally, the prescribing of medication to treat schizophrenia was done through trial and error. Some of the medications have severe side effects such as depression, sexual dysfunction and osteoporosis and thus should only be used in people it is likely to be effective on. Australian scientists now claim to have discovered a gene that may help determine if particular medications will be effective on an individual. This will ensure greater compliance by patients and hence an improved management of the condition.
