Significant improvements have occurred in the area of reducing infections associated with central-line

Patient safety I hospitals has improved over the last 5 years but not significantly. An 18 month old girl in a Baltimore hospital died after hospital staff allegedly failed to notice her severe dehydration which resulted in a cardiac arrest leading to brain damage. She eventually died. A significant safety improvement occurred in the area of blood infections resulting from central-line catheters. These infections kill 14-40% of people affected so the changes potentially saved many lives. In one hospital, infections went from 49 in 2002-3 to 6 in 2003-4.
