The US FDA has given approval for a product by Inner Vision Biometrics Pty Ltd to be marketed in the US. The product is called FerriScan and it is used to test liver iron concentrations. The test will help diagnose people with iron overload diseases such as haemochromotosis and thalassaemia. About 4 million Americans are affected by this group of conditions. The test is also approved for marketing in Europe and Australia. Thalassaemia and thalassaemia haemochromatosis are genetic disorders which causes the iron to be deposited in the body organs such as the liver leading to an iron overload. Lack of awareness of the condition and unusual symptoms leaves many sufferers undiagnosed. Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder which is a severe type of anemia which means the patient requires frequent blood transfusions, often resulting in iron overload.
