Tumor recurrence in mesothelioma patients may be prevented by chemo prior to surgery

Researchers are currently studying the effects of chemotherapy prior to surgery and radiation in order to prevent tumor recurrence in mesothelioma patients. Surgery often involves complete removal of affected lung. Extrapleural pneumonectomy followed by radiation leaves a less than 10% chance of tumours regrowing on the original site but 50% of patients have tumour recurrence in other areas of the body. Researchers hope that the chemo prior to surgery will reduce this recurrence.
