Women face greater risks with epilepsy

Women with epilepsy suffer the additional problem of fluctuations in severity of seizures depending on puberty, menstruation, menopause and pregnancy. Pregnant women with seizures may miscarry and seizures can contribute to the risk of cognitive development problems in their children. Some ant-epileptic drugs also put them at risk of birth defects. 1 million US women have epilepsy.
