Women's heart attacks poorly diagnosed compared to men
Women are less likely to be accurately diagnosed with a heart attack then men which means they are less likely to receive appropriate treatment. Many studies have shown that women suffering a heart attack receive poorer treatment and generally have poorer outcomes than men. Experts warn that women need to be aware that their symptoms may differ to that of men. Heart attack symptoms for both sexes include squeezing chest pain, chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, tightness in chest, feeling of heartburn with or without nausea, feeling of indigestion with or without nausea, sudden dizziness, brief loss of consciousness and pain spreading to shoulders, neck, arm, or jaw. Symptoms more likely to occur in women are indigestion, gas-like pain, dizziness, nausea, unexplained weakness, unexplained fatigue, discomfort between the shoulder blades, pain between the shoulder blades, recurring chest discomfort and sense if impending doom. Heart attacks may be difficult to diagnose and generally a high troponin level can indicate such an occurrence. However, a study in one hospital showed that 47% of men with high troponin levels were diagnosed with heart attack whereas only 33% of women with a high troponin were diagnosed with a heart attack. Thus women are being disadvantaged compared to men.
