A psychiatrist prescribed methadone for a patient with chronic pain and told her she would need to see a doctor to receive more. She later came to the psychiatrist in great pain and claiming she couldn’t find another doctor to give her a methadone prescription. The psychiatrist gave her the prescription as the woman was desperate. She died several days later allegedly from methadone overdose. The woman’s family sued the psychiatrist who claimed that the patient’s death was due to another drug which is known to cause cardiac arrhythmia. The jury ruled in favor of the psychiatrist.
