Glossary for Oral cancer

  • Cancer: Abnormal overgrowth of body cells.
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Erythroplakia: A red patch in the mouth that is not attributable to any other condition.
  • Gastrointestinal tumors: Any tumor of the gastrointestinal (digestive) system, including cancers and benign tumors.
  • Gum cancer: The gum is the soft tissue surrounding the base of the teeth, any malignant proliferation of cells of the gums is called gum cancer.
  • Head Cancer: A malignancy that occurs on the head
  • Head Conditions: Conditions that affect the head
  • Head and neck tumors: Any tumors afflicting the head or neck regions, including both cancerous and benign tumors.
  • Hyperthermia: Hyperthermia is an increase in body temperature in the context of an unchanged thermoregulatory point in the brain.
  • Leukoplakia: A mouth disorder where white patches form on the inside of the mouth and on the tongue. Mostly occurs in older people.
  • Lip cancer: It is the main type of oral cancer. Cancer involving the lips
  • Lip sore: Sores or ulcers on the lips
  • Lip symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both lips.
  • Mouth cancer: Any cancer that occurs in the mouth
  • Mouth conditions: Any condition that affects the mouth
  • Mouth infections: Infection of the mouth
  • Mouth redness: Redness or red spots in the mouth
  • Mouth symptoms: Symptoms of the mouth or oral area.
  • Mouth ulcers: Ulcers in the mouth membranes or oral areas
  • Mouth white patches: White patches or spots inside or around the mouth
  • Neck Cancer: Any cancer that occurs in the neck
  • Nicotine addiction: Nicotine addiction is the uncontrollable desire to continue smoking. Smoking products contain nicotine which is a chemical that can lead to addiction if used over a period of time. Cessation causes withdrawal symptoms which can vary in nature and severity.
  • Oral submucous fibrosis: A rare disorder involving inflammation and progressive fibrosis of tissues inside the mouth. The condition starts with redness, blistering and ulceration inside the mouth that is eventually replaced with stiff fibrous tissue as it heals. The inside of the mouth can become stiff and hinder oral functions such as eating, speaking and even opening the mouth. Even the pharynx may occasionally be involved. The condition can become cancerous. The disorder is often associated with chewing betel nuts in Asian and Indian areas.
  • Palate cancer: Any cancer that is located anatomically on the palate of the mouth
  • Parotid gland cancer: A malignancy that is located in the parotid gland
  • Pharynx cancer: A condition that is characterised by a malignant lesion located in the pharynx
  • Respiratory system cancer: A condition that is characterised by a malignancy anatomically located in the respiratory system
  • Respiratory system tumors:
  • Salivary gland cancer: Salivary gland cancer is a rare form of cancer in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the salivary glands in the mouth, neck or throat
  • Sinus cancer: Cancer that originates from the mucosal tissue lining the sinus cavities or rarely from the bone itself.
  • Smoking: The smoking of cigarettes
  • Smoking-related conditions: Medical conditions related to smoking or other tobacco exposure.
  • Swollen tongue: Swelling affecting the tongue
  • Tongue Cancer: The majority of tongue cancers are squamous cell carcinomas. These arise from the lining that covers the muscles of the tongue
  • Tonsil cancer: A disorder characterised by malignancy that is located on the tonsils
