Blood vessels: The blood vessels are a network of tubes that carry vital oxygenated blood and nutrients from the heart to the various regions, organs, tissues, and cells of the body and return deoxygenated blood and waste products to the heart and lungs. Blood vessels include arteries, veins, arterioles, venules, and capillaries. Blood vessels consist of layers of various cells and tissues. Some major blood vessels include the aorta, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, vena cavae, common carotid artery, common iliac artery, subclavian vein, and femoral vein.
Conditions that can afflict the blood vessels include thrombosis, hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart disease, trauma, embolism, and phlebitis.
