Chambers of the Heart: There is four chambers of the heart. They are the left ventricle, right ventricle, left atrium and right atrium. The chambers of the heart are a part of the cardiovascular system and are responsible for pumping blood to all of the organs, tissues and areas of the body. The chambers of the heart also pump blood from the organs, tissues and areas of the body back to the heart and to the lungs where it picks up fresh oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
In a healthy person, the chambers of the heart pump and move blood in a regular, strong rhythm that is activated by an electrical conduction system. The chambers of the heart are supplied with blood by the coronary arteries.
Conditions that afflict the chambers of the heart include myocardial infarction, infection, heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, angina, trauma, heart failure, birth defects, cardiac arrest, and atherosclerosis.
