Left External Carotid Artery: The left external carotid artery is a major systemic artery that branches off from the left common carotid artery in the left neck. The left external carotid artery supplies vital oxygenated blood and nutrients to the neck, scalp, and face areas. Blood flows from the left ventricle of the heart into the ascending aorta and the aortic arch, then into the left common carotid artery and the left external carotid artery. Another major systemic artery, the left superficial temporal artery, branches off from the left external carotid artery.

Conditions that can afflict the left external carotid artery include diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, occlusion, aneurysm, thrombosis, atherosclerosis, and trauma.
