Posterior Tibial Vein: The posterior tibial vein is a major systemic vein located in the lower leg. The paired posterior tibial vein carries deoxygenated blood and carbon dioxide drained away from the lower leg and foot back toward the heart. Blood flows from the smaller veins in the foot and lower leg into the posterior tibial vein and then into the popliteal vein. Blood then travels into the femoral vein then flows into the external iliac vein and the common iliac vein.

Conditions that can afflict the posterior tibial vein include thrombosis and trauma.
