Thenar Muscles: The thenar muscles are a group of muscles located in the palmar hand just proximal to the thumb. The thenar muscles work together to give the thumb its wide range of motion and variety of movements. The thenar muscles include the abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis, and opponens pollicis.
Conditions that can afflict the thenar muscles include osseous avulsion of the opponens pollicis muscle, overuse injuries, tears, strains, myopathy, atrophy, infectious myositis, neuromuscular diseases, lacerations and contusions.
