Symptoms of Pancreatitis

Symptoms of Pancreatitis: Introduction

The types and severity of symptoms of acute pancreatitis vary between individuals depending on a variety of factors, such as type of pancreatitis, age, general health, medical history, and the presence of complications. Pancreatitis is the result of an inflammation of the pancreas, which causes typical symptoms, such as severe constant abdominal pain, sometimes with back pain. The pain is generally worse with eating or drinking and may be somewhat relieved by sitting up and leaning forward.

Symptoms of acute pancreatitis may include abdominal swelling, fever, pallor, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Bruise marks may appear on the abdomen from internal hemorrhage (bleeding from the pancreas). Another complications is the development of a pseudocyst.

Some people with chronic pancreatitis may have no pain although the majority of people do experience pain. In addition, there may be unexplained weight loss and malnutrition. This can occur even when eating a full diet because of the malabsorption of nutrients from food that happens with chronic pancreatitis. Because of malabsorption, fats, proteins, and sugar are excreted in the stool resulting in very foul-smelling, yellow diarrhea.

Other complications of chronic pancreatitis include the development of diabetes due to the damage done to the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas. People with chronic pancreatitis are at risk for developing pancreatic cancer.

Other serious complications of pancreatitis include the development of infections in the pancreas and kidney failure, Symptoms of these complications may include lack of urine, fever, weight loss, sepsis, hypotension, and shock....more about Pancreatitis »
