Parainfluenza virus type 1: Parainfluenza is an influenza-like viral disease that can cause croup, upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia or bronchiolitis. Type 1 virus occurs during autumn every second year and tends to primarily cause croup as well as respiratory tract infection.

- Treatment of infections with the parainfluenza virus depends upon the type of illness caused, the age of the patient and comorbidities. Treatments include:
- Supportive care - Analgesics and antipyretics such as paracetamol, adequate fluid intake (oral or intravenous), oxygen therapy, intubation and ventilation in cases of severe respiratory compromise
- Treatment of croup - quiet reassurance, oxygen therapy, fluid therapy (oral or intravenous) steroids, nebulised adrenaline, rarely intubation and ventilation in severe airway compromise
- Treatment of bronchiolitis - monitoring, oxygen therapy, adequate fluid intake
