Glossary for Parsonage Turner syndrome

• Aortic dissection: A tear in the inner layer of the aorta (major artery in the body) which allows blood to escape into outer layers of the artery.
• Aortic valve disease: Disease of the heart's aortic valve
• Brachial Neuritis: Condition where there is a sudden onset of shoulder weakness and pain, thought to be due to a viral infection of the nerve roots in the cervical spine
• Gonadal dysgenesis: The abnormal development of gonads which means that the sex hormones are not being produced. The gonads are the primary reproductive organs - testes in males and ovaries in females. These organs produced sperm and eggs as well as sex hormones - testes produce the male hormone called testosterone and ovaries produce the female hormone called estrogen. Abnormal gonad development and hence lack of sex hormones can affect sexual differentiation between males and females and puberty may be delayed or fail to occur altogether.
• Hyperesthesia: An increased sensitivity to touch or painful stimuli
• Limb conditions: Medical conditions affecting the upper or lower limbs.
• Mitral valve disease: Any disease that affects the mitral valve
• Muscle atrophy: Decrease in size and bulk of muscle.
• Muscle conditions: Any condition that affects the muscles of the body
• Muscle weakness: A condition which is characterized by an inability of the muscles to function at their full strenght
• Musculoskeletal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of bones, muscles and related structures.
• Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
• Neuromuscular conditions: Conditions affecting the nerve-muscle systems.
• Osteoporosis: Bone thinning and weakening from bone calcium depletion.
• Shoulder conditions: Any condition that affects the shoulder
• Shoulder pain: A pain that occurs in the shoulder. There is often other associated symptoms depending on the cause of the shoulder pain. For example, swelling may indicate a broken bone.
• Upper arm pain: A feeling of distress and agonycaused by the stimulation of pain nerve endings in the upper arm
• Upper limb conditions: Any medical condition affecting the upper limbs, i.e. the arms, elbows, hands, etc.
