Glossary for Pneumoconiosis

  • Anthracosis: A condition characterized by the accumulation of carbon in the lungs caused by inhaled smoke or coal dust
  • Asbestosis: Lung condition from asbestos exposure
  • Berylliosis: A condition that results from inhalation of beryllium in to form of dust or fumes. The lungs, skin eyes or blood may be affected and the affects can occur immediately or after long term exposure.
  • Chemical poisoning -- Asbestos: Asbestos is a chemical used in a wide range of materials: heat and sound insulation, wall and ceiling panels, pipe insulation, floor tiles, toasters, cements, brake pads, roofing materials and furnaces. Ingestion and other exposures to the chemical can cause various symptoms. The type and severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of chemical involved and the nature of the exposure.
  • Chemical poisoning -- Barium: Barium is an element used in fireworks, glassmaking, contrast X-rays and in the electronics industry . The type and severity of symptoms varies depending on the amount of chemical involved and the nature of the exposure.

  • Chemical poisoning -- Tin: Tin is an element used mainly in steel can coatings, copper wire coating and solder, bronze and pewter.   • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chronic respiratory conditions: Chronic disorders of the respiratory (breathing) systems, such as COPD, emphysema, and others.
  • Coal worker's pneumoconiosis: A lung disease caused by breathing in coal dust. The condition is generally associated with employees in the coal industry. Symptoms usually resolve when exposure to coal dust stops.
  • Coccidioidomycosis: An infectious disease caused by a fungus called Coccidioides immitis which is found in the soil. Transmission usually occurs through inhalation but can rarely occur through the skin. Very rarely, infection can spread throughout the body to involve the skin, bones, joints, lungs and central nervous system which can be fatal if untreated.
  • Congestive Heart Failure: Inadequate pumping and decline of heart function common in the elderly.
  • Cor pulmonale: Enlarged heart due to respiratory difficulty.
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Histoplasmosis: Lung infection from fungus Histoplasma capsulatum
  • Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: Lung fibrosis from unknown causes.
  • Lung cancer: Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. Most lung tumors are malignant.
  • Lung conditions: Various conditions affecting the lungs or related airways.
  • Lung fibrosis: A scarring condition that affects the lungs
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Pleurisy: Inflammation of the pleural membrane
  • Poisoning, overdose or adverse reactions: Medical conditions related to poisons, drug overdosage, or drug adverse reactions.
  • Pulmonary fibrosis: A scarring condition that affects the lungs
  • Respiratory symptoms: Symptoms affecting the breathing systems.
  • Respiratory system conditions: Conditions affecting the respiratory (breathing) systems, such as lungs and airways.
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Shortness of breath: The feeling of being short of breath
  • Silicosis: An occupation lung disease caused by breathing in silica dust.
  • Tuberculosis: Bacterial infection causing nodules forming, most commonly in the lung.
  • Vague symptoms: Vague, unclear, mild or non-specific symptoms
  • Work-related conditions: Medical conditions related to a person's work or occupation, such as workplace chemical exposures.
