Symptoms of Pneumonia
Symptoms of Pneumonia: Introduction
The types and severity of symptoms of pneumonia vary between individuals depending on a variety of factors, such as age, general health, medical history, and the presence of complications. In generally healthy adults, pneumonia can be mild in some cases and not even require hospitalization. However, a strong strain of pneumonia can be fatal to people who have diseases that affect the immune system, such as HIVAIDS, or to people who have chronic illnesses, such as COPD or congestive heart failure, or to the very young or very old. Pneumonia is a common, fatal complication of chronic illnesses.
Pneumonia causes inflammation of the lungs which results in typical symptoms that include fever, chills, shortness of breath and a loose cough that produces large amounts of phlegm. People with pneumonia may also have wheezing (a whistling sound made with breathing), fatigue, sweating, and chest tightness or chest pain that occurs with coughing. Muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, andheadache$ may also occur.
Pneumonia can lead to serious complications, such as empyema, pleural effusion, and lung abscess. Pneumonia can also result in severe shortness of breath, hypoxia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis, shock, respiratory failure, and death....more about Pneumonia »
