Postoperative Jaundice: Introduction
Postoperative Jaundice: Some people can develop liver dysfunction after major surgery and this can result in jaundice. The liver dysfunction is usually poorly defined and can occur in people who have no history of liver problem as well as people with existing liver problems. It may result from such things as damage to the liver or from the anesthetic. However, patients with well controlled liver problems often undergo surgery without any resulting liver problems. The severity of the jaundice is variable and the condition usually resolves without any harmful effects. Heart and upper abdominal surgery are the most likely types of surgery to result in postoperative jaundice.
