Proximal spinal muscular atrophy, type 4: A rare, progressive neuro-muscular disease that occurs in adults. Nerve cells in the spinal cord are impaired resulting in loss of voluntary muscle control in various parts of the body. The lack of use of the muscle results in atrophy or weakness.
