Glossary for Pyoderma Gangrenosum

  • Bedsores: Skin ulcers from prolonged pressure
  • Crohn's disease: Crohn's disease causes inflammation of the digestive system. It is one of a group of diseases called inflammatory bowel disease. The disease can affect any area from the mouth to the anus. It often affects the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum.
  • Dracunculiasis: An infectious disease caused by the nematode Dracunculus medinensis which is usually transmitted by drinking water contaminated by infected crustaceans.
  • Folliculitis: An inflammatory reaction which occurs in the follicles
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Hairy cell leukemia: A chronic leukemia which causes an excess of abnormal mononuclear cells which appear hair like under microscopy
  • Hepatitis B: Viral liver infection spread by sex or body fluids.
  • Hepatitis C: Viral liver infection spread by blood.
  • Kartagener syndrome: A rare genetic disorder characterized by enlarged bronchial tubes, sinusitis and cross-positioning of body organs.
  • Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells, usually white blood cells.
  • Lupus: Autoimmune disease with numerous effects on various organs and linings.
  • Myeloma: A primary malignancy of the plasma cells
  • Nodules: Multiple small areas which are solid to touch
  • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A type of lymphoma, a cancer affecting lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease of unknown etiology that is recognized increasingly in children.
  • Pustules: Small elevated pus containing lesion of the skin
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.

  • Ulcerative colitis: Ulcerative colitis (Colitis ulcerosa, UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon.
  • Ulcerative proctosigmoiditis: Ulcerative proctosigmoiditisis an idiopathic chronicinflammatory disorder limited to the sigmoid colon and the rectum.
  • Ulcers: A local defect in the mucosa
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
  • Wegener's granulomatosis: A rare disease involving blood vessel inflammation which can affect the blood flow to various tissues and organs and hence cause damage. The respiratory system and the kidneys are the main systems affected.
