Symptoms of reflux vary greatly depending on the type of reflux: GERD or vesicoureteral reflux. Symptoms of reflux can also vary in nature and severity between individuals. Symptoms can be mild to severe.

The most typical symptom of reflux due to vesicoureteral reflux is a urinary tract infection. Symptoms of a urinary tract infection include frequency, dysuria, hematuria, and urgency. Bedwetting can also occur. Complications can be serious and include protein in the urine, hydronephrosis, kidney infection, hypertension, kidney failure.

Typical symptoms of reflux due to GERD include a burning sensation in the upper abdomen and chest, heartburn, and indigestion. Some people with reflux due to GERD may also have a condition called hiatal hernia, which can aggravate symptoms of reflux.

Complications of untreated reflux due to GERD include the development of inflammation of the esophagus, esophageal ulcers, scarring of the esophagus, Barrett's esophagus, and increased risk of developing esophageal cancer....more about Reflux »
