Glossary for Relapsing Polychondritis

  • Aortic valve incompetence: A condition characterized by an inability of the aortic valve to function effectively
  • Arthritis pain: Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, which results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited movement.
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Cartilage conditions: Medical conditions affecting the cartilage.
  • Cartilage disorders: Diseases of the cartilage
  • Cauliflower ear: Ear deformity from ear trauma; common in boxers
  • Chondritis: Inflammation of the cartilage of the joint
  • Conductive hearing loss: Hearing loss due to a defect in the external auditory canal or middle ear.
  • Decreased mobility: in some conditions the patients cannot move about
  • Ear symptoms: Symptoms affecting the ear or hearing
  • Episcleritis: Localised, self limiting inflammation of the episclera (connective tissue overlying the sclera).
  • Erythema nodosum: Allergic skin condition usually on the legs
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Joint Pain: Pain affecting the joints

  • Joint swelling: One or more swollen joints
  • Leprosy: A chronic, progressive infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae which causes skin sores and also affects the eyes, mucous membranes and peripheral nerves.
  • Musculoskeletal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system of bones, muscles and related structures.
  • Non-pathogenic inflammatory conditions: Medical disorders that cause inflammation, but are not due to any infectious pathogen.
  • Nose conditions: Any condition that affects the nose
  • Perichondritis: Inflammation of the tissue surrounding the ear cartilage. The inflammation can result from such things as trauma, burns, piercings and chronic ear infections. Prompt treatment is needed to prevent deformity of the ears.
  • Polychondritis: A serious, progressive, episodic condition characterized by inflammation and degeneration of cartilage in the body. The duration and severity of the episodes can vary.
  • Respiratory obstruction: obstruction of the airway and the alveoli.
  • Rheumatic conditions: Any condition that affects ones joints
  • Rhinophyma: Bulbous red nose usually in older men
  • Saddle nose: Facial deformity from collapse of the nasal bridge
  • Scleritis: Inflammation of the white part of eyeball
  • Skin Cancer: Cancer of the skin; the most common type of cancer.
  • Stiff joints: Reduced mobility or movement of the joints
  • Stridor: A harsh high pitched breath sound
  • Syphilis: A sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria (Treponema pallidum). The condition is often asymptomatic in the early stages but one or more sores may be present in the early stages. Untreated syphilis usually results in remission of visible symptoms but further severe damage may occur to internal organs and other body tissues which can result in death.
  • Tracheal Stenosis: Narrowing and hardening of the trachea.
  • Uveitis: A condition which is characterised by the inflammation of the uvea of the eye
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
