Causes of Renal Artery Stenosis
Renal artery stenosis is almost exclusively caused by atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. The same risk factors for atherosclerosis also affect renal artery stenosis, including diet, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and a family history of the disease. Additional risk factors include diabetes and renal insufficiency.
