Symptoms of Sciatica

Symptoms of Sciatica: Introduction

The types and severity of symptoms of sciatica vary between individuals. Symptoms may include abnormal sensations, pain, weakness, burning, numbness and tingling of any areas of the legs or feet covered by the sciatic nerve. Pain may shoot from the back all the way down the leg into the foot. This type of pain may be described as shooting down the back of the leg. Pain may also occur in only one area of the lower extremity, such as above the knee or below the knee. Certain activities, such as coughing, sneezing, movement of the back or any sudden movements, can make symptoms worse.

If the symptoms and causes of sciatica are not treated, they can lead to permanent complications in some cases. Complications can include difficulty in walking or getting up and performing the activities of daily living, poor quality of life, and disability. In some cases, urine incontinence, bowel incontinence or other bowel or bladder difficulties can accompany sciatica. These symptoms are a medical emergency and should be evaluated immediately....more about Sciatica »
